Winter – it’s dull. Grey. Boring. But should it be? We spend most of our time cuddled up in our beds, staring at the dark clouds waiting for a glimmer of sun to peak through.
Our homes turn into refrigerators and it often seems like such a dull place to live in. But it doesn’t have to be this way, because all you have to do is create a friendly and comfortable space in this dreary season and it’s as simple as these five steps:
– Bring the outside in:
There’s no better way to brighten up a dull area than by adding some greenery to it. Houseplants are an effective way of creating a lively space, while adding some aroma and colour.
Tip: Buy plants that don’t require much light or care. Keep it as low maintenance as possible.
– Paint by colours:
There’s nothing better than adding a splash of colour in the dull areas of your home. There are so many ways to brighten up your home, whether it is purchasing some bold pillows or a vibrant ornament. Cheering up your place is one way to beat the winter blues, as warm colours add cheer and energy into any room. Paint your walls to give your home some character.
Tip: According to Women24, brightly coloured paint is more expensive than their duller counterparts, so take this into consideration when choosing a new colour scheme.
– Lighten up:
There are so many ways to lighten up your home, such as opening up your blinds or curtains to let in some natural light or just buying lamps. You can create a cosy atmosphere by lighting candles or lighting the fireplace – this is also effective when Eskom decides to purposefully take your power away.
Tip: Buy scented candles that won’t give you a headache. Try and find candles that give off light fumes, as you don’t want to have a heavy smell in a condensed place.
– Buy something new:
We all love the smell of something new or seeing something new, it doesn’t necessarily have to be expensive or big. It can be a new pillow or an ornament that’s probably just going to sit there for the next three years, but adding a new object to your home is great, gives your eyes something to feast on.
Tip: It does not need to be brand new, it can be second-hand and you can save up for it whenever you have the money to spoil yourself.
– Rearrange your bedroom:
It’s comforting to see the same room every day, but change is good, especially if you’re in a slump. Not only does it leave your bank balance unharmed but it also gives you a chance to play interior decorator. It’s a great way to de-clutter and clean your home, leaving you with a clean slate for the upcoming season.
Tip: Try and rearrange your bedroom, or the other rooms in your home, to get more organised. Throw away, upcycle, or gift things that you really don’t need and free up some space. Perhaps you could try Feng Shui, it might bring you luck.
